Anandibai Joshi is the first female doctor in India. Anandiben Joshi was born on March 31, 1865 into a family of Pune owners. Her childhood was called Yamuna, but after she got married she was named Anandi in her in-laws’ house. These days, after marriage, along with the girls ’last name, only the full name changed.

Anandi married at just 9 years old. Her husband Gopalrao was 16 years older than Anandi. Gopal Rao, 25, married Anandi after the death of his first wife. However, during practice, he succumbed to tuberculosis and at the age of 22, Anandibai died on February 26, 1887.
