Who was Mahant Vijay Das Mahant Vijay Das
He was a resident of Barala village in Faridabad district of Haryana. He was born in a Brahmin family in 1957. His birth name was Madhusudan Sharma. Madhusudan’s son and daughter-in-law died in a road accident in 2009. Granddaughter Durga was 3 years old at that time. The death of the son and daughter-in-law upset Madhusudan. In 2010 she moved from Barala to Mann Mandir in Barsana in Uttar Pradesh with her granddaughter Durga. Madhusudan Sharma came in contact with Sant Ramesh Baba. after reaching Mann Mandir. Impressed by Saint Ramesh Baba, Madhusudan became Vijay Das. Baba Vijay Das put his granddaughter Durga in the Gurukul.
Mahant Vijay Das name was Madhusudan Sharma. He was from Haryana. The son became a saint after the daughter-in-law’s death. Mann had come to the temple with her 3-year-old granddaughter. Now the granddaughter is 16 years old.
Durga is now 16 years old and studies at Man Mandir Ashram School. In 2017 Baba Vijay Das joined the movement against mining of Adibadri and Kankanchal mountains. In 2020, Baba Vijay Das was found in Pasopa Village, Deeg City, Bharatpur, at Pasopanath Temple. Mahant Vijay Das had the entire responsibility of the management of the temple. On 4 July 2022, agitator Baba Haribol Das warned of self-immolation outside CM Jaipur’s residence in protest against mining. On July 19, one Baba Narayan Das in Pasopa climbed the mobile tower. . Baba Vijay Das set himself on fire on July 20, 2022 at around 1 p.m. Baba Vijay Das passed away on July 23, 2022 at around 3 am.
Total ban on mining in Adibadri and Kankanchal
There are a number of hills in the Deeg-Kaman and Nagar areas of Bharatpur. These hills come to Braj Chaurasi Kos. According to the Sant Samaj, these hills are places of pilgrimage. According to religious beliefs, Lord Krishna used to do pastimes here. In this situation, the Saint Samaj was opposing the mining going on here since 2004. Because of this, about a year and a half ago, the Saints sat on a dharna at Pasopa, Deeg. The strike lasted 551 days. On 20 July, the dharna was called off at 5.45 pm following the self-immolation attempt by Baba Vijay Das. The government announced the declaration of Adibadri and Kankanchal as reserved forest areas. All mining also accepted the change.
The body will be taken to the Gaushala of Man Mandir in Barsana. The funeral will be held in the evening. Crowds have gathered for Baba’s last darshan.
The demand to stop mining was raised in 2004
The movement for a complete ban on mining in Adibadri and Kankanchal started in 2004. The movement was led by Sant Ramesh Baba of Man Mandir in Barsana. In 2007, the saints organized the first major movement in Bolkheda, Bharatpur. This movement was led by Baba Haribol Das. Haribol Das is the same saint who warned against self-immolation in front of the CM House on July 4, 2022.
In 2007, the then BJP government in Rajasthan assured to accept the demand to stop mining and declare a forest area of 5,232 hectares in the Adibadri and Kankanchal hills. In 2009, the Gehlot government issued a notification for both the demands. Mining was stopped in 75 percent of the area of Adibadri and Kankanchal hills. Mining continued in 25 percent of the area. Sant Samaj also wanted to ban mining in this 25 percent area. This area was in the Pahari and Nagar tehsil of Bharatpur.
These are Adibadri and Kankanchal hills where legal mining was opposed. This area has now been declared protected. Baba had set fire to these mountains.
The movement started again in 2017
The movement intensified again in 2017 to completely ban mining in the Kanchal and Adibadri hills. Hindu organizations along with Sant Samaj also joined the movement. This move lasted about 45 days. On behalf of the then BJP government, Arun Chaturvedi assured the saints that mining would stop in the remaining 25 percent. But the promise was not fulfilled.

If the mining did not stop, the sages made a new strategy of movement. On January 16, 2021, in Pasopa village of Deeg city, the Saints started a sit-in to declare a forest area and stop mining completely. Many times memorandums were delivered to the government and administration during this period. But no concrete steps were taken. The dharna of the saints in Pasopa village lasted for 551 days.

Baba Haribol Das’ warnings came true On July 4, 2022, Baba Haribol Das, associated with the movement, warned of self-immolation outside the CM House if mining was not stopped. Along with Haribol, 14 sages and saints accepted self-immolation. Baba Vijay Das was also there. The administration was activated after the warning. Divisional Commissioner Sanwarmal Verma held a meeting with Baba Haribol. The talks were fruitless. After that, on behalf of the government, Minister Vishvendra Singh held talks with Baba Haribol and sages on 18 July. In the meeting, the saints secured the demand to stop mining in 25 percent of the two mountains and declare the area as a forest area.
But the very next day, on the morning of July 19, around 6 am, a protesting Baba Narayan Das climbed the mobile tower at Pasopa. Baba Hari Bol said that Narayan Das will not come down until the consent letter for both the demands is received from the government. After climbing the tower of Baba Narayan Das, the minister Vishvendra Singh, the administration and the sages again held talks.

Negotiations were underway. Narayan Das was in the tower. Suddenly at 1 pm Baba Vijay Das caught fire in Pasopa. They ran saying Radhe-Radhe. Japta police were present at the spot in view of the commotion. But the incident could not be stopped. 5-6 policemen put out the fire by putting blankets on Baba. After the incident, Baba Narayan Das came down from the tower. After the incident, minister Vishvendra Singh reached the spot and handed over a letter to fulfill the demands of the saints.
After Baba’s self-immolation, now the politics of Rajasthan has heated up. The former chief minister has tweeted and said that the government should take action against mining through the list.
