New Delhi: Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and closest to Arvind Kejriwal, has become the face of the Aam Aadmi Party government in a short span of time. However, for the first time, charges of corruption have also been brought against him. Sisodia faces charges over new excise duty policy.

Hailing from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, Sisodia, 50, attended a government school before pursuing his diploma in journalism from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He was working in the media when he came in contact with Arvind Kejriwal. Gradually he became a social worker like Kejriwal. They worked together in NGO Parivartan. Issues such as the availability of rations, electricity bills and the right to information have been raised. He did a great job especially in the slums of East Delhi. He was also active in Anna Hazare’s India Against Corruption movement.

People see Sisodia as Arvind Kejriwal’s right hand man. A member of his team told the Indian Express, “Manish Sisodia has single-handedly handled the political affairs of the party and the functioning of the government on more than one occasion. Known as the one who is able to give a road map for the view of the Chief Minister. If necessary, also inform him of the reality.”

How much Arvind Kejriwal trusts Sisodia is clear from his departments. Kejriwal has given the charge of departments like Finance, Education, Health, Home, Vigilance, PWD, Planning, Urban Development and Land and Building to Sisodia. When Satyendar Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged hawala transactions, he was also given the responsibility of the departments held by Satyendar Jain.

AAP leaders have credited Sisodia for bringing the “revolution” in Delhi’s government schools. The opposition, however, accuses Sisodia and the AAP government of presenting a false picture of “progress” in Delhi’s schools. Last year, Delhi BJP leaders had alleged corruption in the construction of school classrooms in the city and filed complaints against Sisodia and Jain with the Anti-Corruption Branch.

The allegations against Sisodia come at a time when the AAP is eyeing big gains in the upcoming Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections. Both the states are currently ruled by the BJP. All AAP’s election campaigns so far have focused on education and the work done by Sisodia in Delhi. In campaign speeches in different states and cities, Arvind Kejriwal repeatedly says, “I don’t know how to spread hate. I don’t know politics. Come build schools.”

The Aam Aadmi Party is well aware that in the last few days, CM Kejriwal has been talking about being the Centre’s target again and again. In the recent assembly session, Kejriwal said that Sisodia may have to face further action. Pointing at him, he asked, “Do you look like a thief?”
