On June 21, it would have been 8:30 p.m. I was in my shop when the phone rang. He picked up the phone, then a voice came from there, prime minister saheb wants to talk to lady Draupadi. I immediately left for the lady’s house. Not even 5 minutes had passed when the phone rang again. I said, I’m just arriving. I understand, something more urgent. Running to enter the lady’s house. Then he was getting ready to sleep in his room.
I gave the phone to the lady and said: the prime minister wants to talk to you. He spoke for about a minute. The lady was silent. Tears flowed from his eyes. I and his daughter Itishree used to take care of him. As soon as he took care of himself, what he said became history. She said, “Such big news and I don’t have mine.”
Mayurbhanj BJP district president Bikash Mahato was saying these things, then he too got emotional. Bikash is the son of Rabindranath Mahato himself, who brought Draupadi into politics at his insistence, at whose hand Draupadi rose from adviser to the highest office in the country.
Bikash Mahato is active in Odisha politics. He has a family relationship with Draupadi. When she was the Governor of Jharkhand, Bikash was also her PA for 6 months.
Says Bikash, “His name was about to be announced at a press conference in Delhi after half an hour. I knew the house would be packed as soon as the announcement was made. The lady was excited, she had to get ready to meet the crowd Somehow we prepared them for the crowd and congratulations after half an hour.
Why didn’t the call go directly to the lady? Bikash says, “There is a small problem with the signal inside your house. Sometimes the phone doesn’t ring. Maybe the same thing happened that day too. My number was already present in PMO. PA madam’s health is had deteriorated while he was governor. Then I was also his PA for the last six months from July 2021 to December. That’s probably why I got a call from the PMO.
Then Draupadi had said, I have acted as a teacher, where will politics be with us?
We asked Draupadi’s brother Tarini Sen Tudu, her teacher Basudev Behera, acquaintances and family: Do you think Draupadi would become president? Says Behera: She was sure she would pass matriculation and become a teacher, but she wouldn’t even dream of being president. The response from his brother and the others was more or less the same. She also became a teacher.
Draupadi was very good in studies from the beginning. She soon became a teacher. The Murmu behind the picture smiles softly. Before joining politics, he used to teach in a school in Rairangpur.
In 1997, Draupadi’s husband Shyam Charan Murmu was told by Rabindranath Mahato that Draupadi should contest the election for the post of Ward-2 councilor of Rairangpur. We will all support them. Then Rabindranath was the district president of BJP. He also practiced law and was a household name in the area.
Shyam gave the same answer that a husband from a middle-class family would give: “This politics is not for us.” We are small people. Not good for women at all. But Rabindranath was adamant to persuade Shyam and Draupadi. To persuade both, some other BJP workers were also taken along.
Says Bikash, “Councillor’s seat was reserved for STs. Look for a qualified ST woman as requested by the state leadership of the party. Father was familiar with Mrs. Murmu when she came to study at the tribal residential school in Bhubaneswar. All two had an uncle-niece relationship. Then the lady was a teacher in Rairangpur and a manager in Shyam Bank.
He says, “At first Shyam ji didn’t agree. In our society people are hesitant to bring women into politics, maybe the same hesitation was there within them too, but then there he agreed. After that the lady contested and won.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi (then CM of Gujarat) at an event in Odisha. Rabindranath Mahato is standing behind him. Draupadi Murmu is sitting on the stage behind.
How was Draupadi’s uncle’s relationship with Rabindranath Mahato?
Karthik Manjhi and Draupadi Murmu, an MP and a former minister in the Odisha government, were born in Uparbeda village in Mayurbhanj district. Karthik Manjhi is the person who got Draupadi admitted in a tribal residential school in Bhubaneswar. The background Draupadi comes from, at that time it was a difficult task to get documents like birth caste certificate and then get admission in a big place like Bhubaneshwar.
He got admission with the help of Manjhi. Former minister Karthik Manjhi and Rabindra Nath Mahto were on good terms. Draupadi appeared to be Manjhi’s niece in a distant way. When Manjhi introduced Draupadi to Mahto in Bhubaneshwar, their relationship also became that of uncle and niece.
Draupadi used to visit uncle Manjhi at his house. Because of political connections and friendship, Rabindranath also came and went. Here the relationship between Draupadi and Rabindranath Mahato deepened. Draupadi respected Rabindranath just as she respected her uncle. Gradually he became a member of Mahto’s family. Draupadi would attend the house of Mahto in marriage, marriage, sorrow and happiness just like the daughter of the house.
In the picture, Draupadi Murmu is with Rabindranath Mahto’s daughter and family. He not only attended his daughter’s wedding but also performed all the responsibilities as a family member.
When Draupadi lost the MLA election, Mahto made her the district president.
People present at the BJP office in Rairangpur said, “In 2009, Draupadi contested for the MLA post for the third time but lost. On the other hand, Rabindranath had completed two terms as the President of the district.According to the rules, he could not get this post for the third time.
By then, Draupadi had become a familiar face in Odisha politics. Draupadi was at the forefront of meeting people and sharing their sorrows and pains. Mahto wanted Draupadi to be active in politics. So he got Draupadi to be the district president.
After the death of the children, Draupadi told Mahto: she could not be a good mother
Within four years, Draupadi lost her two sons and her husband. The eldest son died in 2010, the youngest son died in 2013. In 2014, the husband separated. The statue of all three is installed in Paharpur village school. This school was once the home of Draupadi.
Says Bikash, “When his two sons were done, he told his father, I want to quit politics. That’s why I couldn’t give time to my children. I couldn’t take care of them properly. The father told him, ‘No one has a bus in the accident. It’s not your fault. You have to do the job for which fate has chosen you.
