In the nineties, there was an atmosphere of political instability in the country. It is 1996. BJP was getting stronger than before, but then it was not as strong as it is today. Even the era of sole Congress rule was no more. In the 1996 elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 161 seats, while the Congress won 141 seats. Being a big party, BJP got a chance. demanded to form a government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in, also became Prime Minister. But what happened? Due to not being able to demonstrate a majority in the chamber, the government fell in just 16 days. The phase that came after that will never be forgotten for former SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

This was the period when Mulayam (Mulayam SinghYadav) had continued to reach the Prime Minister’s chair. This fighter in the political arena became the prime minister of the country. Another Yadav clan leader was also one of the main reasons for the failure of a Yadav clan leader to become the Prime Minister. and maybe even a third leader, Mulayam Singh always regretted not being able to become Prime Minister and he does not shy away from accepting this fact. The events behind this have been very interesting.

What was the reason why Dimple did not become Prime Minister the first time?

It is said that one of the main reasons behind the failure of Mulayam Singh Yadav to become the Prime Minister is the opposition of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sharad Yadav. Mulayam did not even hide his displeasure with Lalu Prasad. When the Atal Bihari government fell in 1996, it was decided to form a United Front coalition government. Most people agreed on the name of Mulayam Singh Yadav. His name was approved for the post of prime minister. The date of the oath was even set. But that couldn’t happen.

His wire is connected to Mulayam Singh’s daughter-in-law ie Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple. It is said that Lalu Prasad wanted to marry his daughter to Akhilesh Yadav. But that couldn’t happen. It wasn’t that Mulayam Singh didn’t try. In fact, when Akhilesh came to know about this, he expressed his desire to marry Dimple. Mulayam Singh also tried to convince the son, but Akhilesh did not agree.

It is said that Lalu Prasad was angry with this. Along with Lalu Prasad, Sharad Yadav also did not support the name of Mulayam Singh Yadav. After that the name of HD Deve Gowda was agreed upon instead of Mulayam Singh Yadav and he became the Prime Minister. Mulayam had to settle for the Defense Ministry. However, in the subsequent elections, opportunities also came to him.

When the Deve Gowda government fell within a year

HD Deve Gowda could not even complete a year as Prime Minister and had to resign within 324 days. There was a time when the CBI was tightening the noose on Lalu Prasad in the fodder scam. Lalu Prasad had 22 MLAs which was enough to swing Deve Gowda’s chair. Deve Gowda lost the chair but did not get Lalu Yadav’s relief from the CBI by influencing the fodder scam probe.

journalist and writer Sankarshan Thakur His book focused on Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar Bandhu Bihari I write that after the first round of CBI investigation in the fodder scam case in 1997, Lalu called the then Prime Minister Deve Gowda and scolded him:

“All this is not going well, the result of what you are doing will not be right. If you want to conspire, do it against BJP, why are you against us?”

Deve Gowda expressed his helplessness in this matter. However, it was he who had appointed CBI director Joginder Singh and could have provided relief to Lalu Yadav if he had wanted to. Sankarshan Thakur writes that Lalu Prasad remarked as soon as he appeared before Deve Gowda at the Prime Minister’s residence:

“Why did he make you PM? He made a big mistake by making you MP.

Deve Gowda also responded in kind:

“The Government of India and the CBI are few like a Janata Dal who whenever they wanted to lead them like a buffalo. You run the party like a buffalo, but I run the government of India.”

journalist Sugata Srinivasaraju in HD Deve Gowda “Farrows in a Field: The Uncharted Life of HD Deve Gowda” He wrote a book called In this he wrote for Deve Gowda,

“He is more than the sum of all his imperfections. Explain it because the same line was written in an article for Nehru ji too.”

This line is also relevant because in an article about Jawaharlal Nehru it was written that Nehru is many times more than the sum of all his imperfections. Sugata wrote that when Deve Gowda was stepping down as Prime Minister, he could have sided with Vajpayee, but he did not. The chair went but did not compromise its image and principles.

Because once again he became Lalu!

After the fall of the Deve Gowda government, the search was on again for a new face that everyone agreed with. Lalu Prasad tried it himself. There was no credible face to be seen. Jyoti Basu of CPI(M) vetoed his candidature. Chandra Babu Naidu pulled out of the race because he did not want to ride the shaky boat of the United Front.

Sankarshan Thakur writes in Bandhu Bihari that Naidu had no objection to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s name. The Communist Party also agreed on Mulayam’s name and was ready to support. But Lalu Prasad was adamant that only a Yadav must become the Prime Minister, so why can’t he do it himself! But the investigation was still on against him for the fodder scam. Then even Mulayam was accused of corruption!

Lalu Yadav made it clear that he will not support Yadav from Uttar Pradesh. And then he proposed a new name to Chandra Babu Naidu and the Communist Party: Inder Kumar Gujral. Gujral’s image was clear, he was a respected man, intellectual and also experienced in state art. No one objected to his name.

However, Gujral’s qualities may have been a reason for others, but Lalu Prasad had brought him forward in the hope that his man would sit in the prime minister’s chair and get relief. He had sent Gujral to Rajya Sabha from the RJD quota. Many voters joined Lalu’s proposal. Gujral became the Prime Minister and thus once again lost the opportunity to become the Prime Minister at the hands of Mulayam.

Mulayam Singh used to consider four people as reason

Mulayam Singh had also once made a statement that four people did not allow me to become the Prime Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Sharad Yadav, Chandra Babu Naidu and Vice President Singh. However, later her relationship with Lalu Prasad turned sweet. Not good with Mulayam’s son but Lalu’s daughter married into his family. Both also became samdhi. Then the acidity of the mind also disappeared and sweetness also entered the relationship. Today there is a good relationship between both families.
