The assembly elections in Gujarat this year are likely to be one of the toughest for the opposition Congress. The Congress is likely to face the challenge of defeating the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state with the Aam Aadmi Party. (AAP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) faces the double challenge of saving its support base from the parties.

Gujarat Congress lacks strong local leaders and active workers

Parties like AAP and AIMIM have become quite active in Gujarat and are trying to prepare their political ground but Gujarat Congress unit spokesperson has claimed that people will vote for their party in Gujarat elections that will be held this year. As the general public of the state is fed up with more than two decades of BJP misrule. Noting that the Congress has not been able to win the assembly elections in Gujarat since 1995, Rajkot-based political observer Suresh Samani told PTI. it would be one of the toughest elections for Congress in Gujarat.

People voted for Congress

He said that in 2017 the Congress had won 77 seats in the 182-member assembly and a large number of people voted in favor of the Congress. The people of rural Gujarat had expressed their faith in the Congress. The BJP had returned to power with 99 seats. Suresh Samani said that at the time of the 2017 elections, the farming community was unhappy because they were not getting a good price for their crops.

In the last five years, the BJP government in the state has procured all agricultural produce, including cash crops such as groundnut, at a reasonable price below the minimum support price (MSP). The rural population now has nothing to complain about. He said urban middle class and upper middle class voters have remained steadfast with the BJP for various reasons, including Hindutva, despite rising inflation.

The Congress plan is likely to succeed

Therefore, the Congress’s plan to strengthen its base in urban areas of the state is not likely to be very successful, Samani said. The party’s position in north and some tribal areas of Gujarat, considered a Congress stronghold , has also been weakened as many of its stalwarts have joined the BJP over the past five years. According to Samani, infighting in the Congress and lack of active workers are also a cause for concern for the party.

Continuing to strengthen its position in Gujarat

The second challenge facing the Congress is Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP and Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, who are constantly trying to make a dent in the traditional Congress vote bank by consolidating their position in Gujarat. The convener and Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal has held several rallies in Gujarat in recent times and has addressed the Congress and appealed to the people not to vote for him.

Trying to give tough competition to BJP

Kejriwal says the Congress does not have the capacity to defeat the BJP. AAP is trying to give a tough fight to BJP in Gujarat. Chhotu Vasava’s Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) has also announced an alliance with AAP to take on the Congress for the tribal polls. AIMIM chief Owaisi had recently visited some Muslims. – majority constituencies in Ahmedabad, Vadgam in North Gujarat and Kutch in order to woo the minority community. Owaisi is trying to strengthen his party’s position in Gujarat.

Gujarat unit spokesperson Manish Doshi said

At the same time, another political observer Hari Desai believes that the Congress can give a tough fight to the BJP if it focuses on the Kham (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi and Muslim) vote bank and also the disgruntled Patel community. Spokesperson Manish Doshi, however, said that the people of Gujarat are fed up with the arrogance and misrule of the BJP for more than two decades and this will reflect in the 2022 assembly elections as they are against of the ruling party.

Central leadership is watching everything closely

Doshi said, “The Congress has come up with a strategy and the central leadership of the party is watching everything closely and telling us what policy to adopt in the elections. We have decided to make this election a fight against the minister Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and BJP state unit president CR Patil.
