I am the Karam dam built on the hill of Vindhyachal range. Four years ago in the year 2018, the then minister in-charge of Dhar district, Antar Singh Arya, did my first stone and Bhumi Pujan. I’ve already absorbed all 8 towns on my outskirts. Yes, I thought, when it is ready, the fields made in 10 thousand 500 hectares of 42 villages will bloom and there will be prosperity in the villages… what can I say now… I cracked at the first rain. , whose water is leaking from me, I did not know that it would give sleepless nights to the people of 18 villages in two districts. People’s houses will be razed and they will be forced to live in the hills.
Twelve villages of Dhar district and 6 villages of Khargone district, which are in the lower part of my border, have become vacant. Be it Jahangirpura village or Faraspura village, the lock is hung on every house. I see the old men, women and children of Jahangirpura leave their homes and spend the night on the hill which is more than 500 feet high. There is silence around… You yourself know the agony of people who get angry at the leak in me…
On leaving the house, Taru Bai, Sikor Bai and Suraj Bai, who have been sitting on the mountain for two days, are furious at this negligence. It’s called – Have you seen a dam built with earth somewhere? The lives of the poor are at stake today. It did not drain the water from the dam and stop the rainwater. Carrying all the children and children, they ran to the hill for their lives in the night. Before building the dam, we would have asked ourselves once, how fast the water flows in the river. Now asking to go somewhere else in the house. We’re not going anywhere, whatever happens… will happen.
Taru Bai, Sikor Bai and Suraj Bai are waiting for the situation to return to normal on the hill.
Moreover, these women said: in this village we have everything, we will not go anywhere, even if we have to live on this hill. Build a dam by pouring earth… Was there a lack of cement? A good seal had to be made with ballast cement. Leave the cement, put black soil and raise the wall. Our children are lying here hungry and thirsty because of their neglect. We spend the whole night awake, what will we do if someone takes our children, livestock and money? Where will you run away, who will you run away with? Whatever happens to us, whatever happens here.
Kusum Bai and Anar Singh have also gone to live on the hill with the family. They take care of them by coming home from time to time.
the woman returned home under the pretext of drinking water
This is Kusum Bai’s pain too. he says, I came of age while living in this town. No water can drown us. All the members of the house are sitting on the mountain except me. I too was sitting on the mountain. When I was thirsty and wanted to see the house, I came under the pretext of drinking water. Daughters had come for Rakshabandhan, tying Rakhi, seeing the state here, everyone returned.
Anar Singh says: This is where the birth took place. When the announcement was made in the evening, they left the house and went to the mountains. Buffaloes were also taken. We are 5 people in the house, we have some left over, but the rest of the things are here, where we will take them. If water comes, everything will be ruined.
The people of Jahangirpura stay on the mountain with children and women.
After the alert many families stayed in Dharamshala
After the police administration issued an alert, many families have stayed in Dhamnod’s Dharamshala, while some have taken shelter in the school. Many went to live on the hill with the cattle. After the village is empty, the streets are closed with the help of thorn bushes and wooden poles. Some villagers explained that all family members have been sent as relatives. I have stayed here alone to take care of the house and cattle. I stay at home all day, go to the relief camp at night.
The Jahangirpura administration has developed the school as a relief camp, where the villagers stay.
People move to school in Jahangirpura
Speaking of Jahangirpura, an alert has been issued here as well. Many people in this village of 50-60 houses have moved to high-altitude schools, while some have locked their houses and gone to relatives’ houses. They say we are panicking, but we didn’t want to leave the village. For safety, you need to take compulsive measures. Praying to God that this calamity will be avoided and our people will continue to flourish in the same way.
A channel has been made to remove the water from the side of the dam by cutting the mountain.
that’s the whole point
A dam built at a cost of Rs 305 crore on the Karam river between Bharudpura and Kothida villages in Dhar district has started leaking with the first rain. After getting information about the leak on Thursday evening, 12 villages of Dhar and 6 villages of Khargone have been evacuated from the security point of view. To reduce the water pressure in the dam, it was decided to release the water by making cuts on Saturday night. This water will flow through the Karam River and pass through the affected villages up to Maheshwar and meet the Narmada River.
Earlier, a channel was being dug to clear the water from the dam, but due to the arrival of the rock, the excavation work had many problems. At the same time, the Department of Meteorology has also issued an alert for heavy rains. After that, the government changed the plan to draw water from the dam. The wall of the dam in which water seeps in, decided to remove the water by making a cut. The dam water is now being released from the cut.
Along with the administration, social organizations have also come forward to help the population. They are distributing essential items including food.
Divisional Commissioner Dr Pawan Sharma is monitoring the condition of the dam along with the officials.
