Parents sweating when getting a CT scan of children at Pgi

listen to the news

Chandigarh. CT scan of young children attending PGI OPD is done only once a week on Tuesdays. The reason for this is the unavailability of anesthetists to perform this test at the Advanced Pediatric Center. In this situation, hundreds of children who have come for treatment in different departments of PGI only have the facility of examination for one day a week. The number of children queuing to be tested is in the hundreds, while 40 children get a CT scan in just one day. Due to the strange standards of the institute, on the one hand, due to non-examination of children, there is a delay in treatment, on the other hand, parents also face many problems. Parents say it is wrong to stop treatment citing shortage of doctors in such a large institution. There must be facility for the examination at least three days a week.
Case-1
Kanta from Bihar has been in Chandigarh for the past three weeks with her six-month-old son. After seeing him in PGI OPD for heart related complications, the doctor has ordered a CT scan, but even after wanting Kanta is unable to examine his son for the past two weeks. Due to the end of booking for Tuesday’s review at the Pediatric Advance Center, she has a date in two weeks.
Case-2
The same has happened to Chandramukhi, a resident of Madhya Pradesh. She is also anxious for her three-month-old daughter to have a CT scan. Despite all efforts, there was no success. Chandramukhi also tried to do the test from outside but was disappointed as this test done by sedating the children is not available in private centres.

Anesthesia equipment is necessary for children
According to the experts of the Department of Radiodiagnosis, from birth to a child so young, that he cannot take the test without moving, he needs sedation because the patient cannot be examined when he moves during the CT scan. Therefore, these children must be sedated before the test. These children need pre- and post-monitoring for only 10 to 15 minutes of investigation. After being examined under the supervision of a team of unconscious doctors, this child is kept under their supervision until he regains consciousness so that nothing untoward happens. During the examination, it is very important to keep checking the child’s blood pressure, pulse, heartbeat and other necessary parameters, which can only be done by the anesthesiologist.

Test not available at private diagnostic center
The situation is that due to the compulsion of anesthesiologists in CT scans for the sedation of young children, research in private centers is not possible. In this situation, parents cannot provide the facility of timely examination and treatment to their child even if they want to. The family is upset but the PGI administration invokes rules and order. It is worth noting that the fee for CT of children in IGP is set according to the organ. Its price ranges from 300 to 1100 rupees.
