Story-Go: Is there time to tell and listen to stories? Maybe it would have happened. Or it wouldn’t happen. But one thing definitely happens. Tales, stories are interesting for everyone. It would be better if they were present on time. If not, it’s in the past, although it’s not a bad thing. Because they are always not only telling us something, but also teaching. It brings us memories of our times. Even after sweetening the serious spices, it is drunk smoothly. That is why ‘Dastaan-Go’ has started, the process of bringing interesting stories to your loved ones. It will try to continue this process. From Monday to Friday, every day…
Sir, There will be a lot of people who are fond of old movie songs. And also they must have heard these songs often, ‘Jawaan hai Mohabbat, Haseen hai Zamana, Lutaya Hai Dil Ne, Khushi Ka Khazana’ or ‘Awaaz de kahan hai, Duniya Meri Jawaan Hai’ or ‘Aa ja meri ruined love ke ‘Support, who can fix the broken destiny’. But perhaps few people pay attention to who has sung these songs. Some people would have told him about Suraiya and some maybe even about Lata Mangeshkar. Because in the beginning Lata ji used to sing for films in a similar way. However, people in the know would have remembered as soon as they heard such perennial songs, that face, whose talent has been completed not only in India but also in Pakistan. Noor Jahan who was born in the year 1925 on this day i.e. 21st September in Kasur, Punjab.
By the way, before we continue, it must be said that somewhere the date of birth of Noor Jahan is also written as September 23 and the year 1926. But you should not be fooled by this. Because these mistakes happen in dates, years related to older people. Despite this, some kind of solidification also occurs. And in the case of Noor Jahan, this has been confirmed by the ‘Citizen Archive of Pakistan’. It is a voluntary organization (NGO) operating from Karachi and Lahore, Pakistan. Works for the preservation of art, culture. He prepared a submission for ‘Google Art and Culture’ in 2017. The date written on it is 21 September 1925. It has also been said in this that Noor Jahan’s status was such that she was called ” ma’am’ in Pakistan, even powerful military officers used to treat her with great respect.
Pakistan had also given the title of ‘Mallika-e-Tarannum’ to ‘Madame Noor Jahan’. It means ‘Queen of Music’. However, long before that, Noor Jahan had earned the status of ‘Nightingale of the East’ in India. The British used to call Indians ‘Purbia’, not in the same capacity. That is, according to this, even before Lata Mangeshkar, the ‘Swar Nightingale’ of India, if anyone had achieved this status, then it was Noor Jahan. And Lata ji used to imitate her voice. Those who don’t believe this can confirm it by listening to Lata ji’s songs in her early films like ‘Bazaar’, ‘Badi Behen’, ‘Anokha Pyaar’, ‘Chandni Raat’ etc. Although later Lata ji started singing in her own style, in her own voice, it was recorded in such a way that it has not been matched till now and will not be found for years.
But sir, there was a combination of these two great singers. For the first time, in a memorable way. Yatindra Mishra is an expert who has a connection with the royal house of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. He has done great work in terms of film and music. Yatindra ji had once said, “The matter is from 1944. At that time Master Vinayak’s company ‘Praful Pictures’ was making a film ‘Badi Maa’. Two songs from this film had been of shooting in Kolhapur. Noor Jahan had come to pick him up in Kolhapur. He was playing the role of both actress and singer there. Earlier it used to be mostly like that. At that time Lata ji also used to work only in ‘Praful Pictures’. When he got information about Noor Jahan’s arrival, he went to meet him with the help of Master Vinayak. There Noor Jahan from where Master Vinayak introduced Lata ji – Yeh Lata Hai, Achcha Gaati Hai’.
Sir, by this time Noor Jahan had also attained the status of “Thumri Ki Rani” after receiving musical training from the best classical singers like Ustad Ghulam Mohammad, Bade Ghulam Ali. It should also be mentioned here that ‘Thumri’ is a type of Hindustani sub-classical music. So sir, when Lata ji reconciled with Noor Jahan, as Yatindra ji says, she “asked him to narrate something.” On this, Lata ji said a bandish to raga Jayjaywanti. If he liked it, Noor Jahan asked him to recite a film song as well. On this, Lata ji sang in front of him the song from the movie ‘Back’ – Life is useless without you. After hearing Lata ji’s singing, Noor Jahan encouraged her and also blessed her with that son, make a lot of Riyaz. One day you will become a great singer. And how the talk of ‘Madame Noor Jahan’ came true at the age of sixteen, this world knows.
However, this same noor went to Pakistan at the time of partition of India and remained there thereafter. Incidentally, he had also once expressed a certain ‘Ujr’ (compulsion) in this regard. This is from the year 1983. At that time ‘Madame Noor Jahan’ had arrived in India. Then Yusuf Sahab (Dilip Kumar) had interviewed him for Doordarshan. Dilip Kumar, who appeared in the 1947 film ‘Jugnu’ with Noor Jahan just before India’s independence. Both were face to face for the interview. And the interesting thing is that before the movie ‘Madame Noor Jahan’, Khavind (husband, whom the woman voluntarily married) was produced by Shaukat Hasan Rizvi. He married “Madame Noor Jahan” in 1942. This marriage lasted for about 11 years. She married for the second time to Pakistani filmmaker Ejaz Durrani, in 1959. The relationship with him lasted only 12 years.
So sir, in that interview, Noor Jahan had said in front of Dilip Sahab, “No one wants to leave the established home (in Hindustan). My Miyan (Shaukat Hasan) went, I also left. But now that I have a banquet to come here, I also accepted the sir-o-glasses and came. This desire has definitely been there, for so many years, 35 years, I have waited for this moment. And keep praying this o Allah! Once again in the my life I will meet you (people you know in India). From my brothers and sisters, from friends. Now we also explain here that at the time of partition of India, ‘Madame Noor Jahan’ chose Pakistan for herself because her birth place (Kasoor Kasba) had reached the part of Pakistan, which she did not want to leave. Therefore the land of Karma (Bombay) was named God Hafiz.
After that, even after going to Pakistan, ‘Madam Noor Jahan’ raised the same flags of fame with her skills as they were buried in India before independence. It is said that there his songs were broadcast daily on Radio Pakistan and were not recorded. She used to sing on the radio station and it was broadcast live. This went on for many years. His career as a singer and actor spanned almost 60 years. During this, he sang more than 10,000 songs in languages like Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi. He worked in more than 50 films in both countries. Of these, about 35-36 had already been made before India’s independence. She then went to Pakistan and achieved the status of being the first woman film director there. In this capacity, he did a Punjabi film ‘Chan Ve’ in 1951. In this, the singing and acting were also his. And in the end, he said goodbye to the world with the same pride with which he lived his life. It was December 23, 2000.
